A Recap of Fashion's Biggest Night.
This year's Met Gala was a celebration of the Costume Institute exhibition, "Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between." The highly anticipated event is a celebration of fashion showcased through contemporary culture. Only the biggest names in all things music, film, broadway, fashion, and pop culture attend the event, with the list changing each year. Rei Kawakubo is known as one of the most influential designers over the past 40 years, often changing the way we approach fashion and innovation. While Rei Kawakubo is known for her extravagant and avant garde approach to fashion, she doesn't see herself as an extraordinary designer. In an interview with Vogue, she explained, "I am just working every day, day to day, with what I believe. It's a very ordinary way of dealing with your life-just dealing with your work." While many designers look to the past for inspiration, R.K. doesn't look at anything old or pre-existing as a way to keep her shows fresh and unconventional. The designer doesn't believe the praise she receives, and is convinced that you are only as good as your last show. 120 of Kawakubo's most extraordinary and iconic designs will be showcased at the exhibit, with designs dating back to the early 80's. This star studded event provides the perfect scene to showcase a wild look. Many celebrities approached their red carpet with looks similar R.K.'s famous avant garde style. Let's take a look at some of the best and most over-the-top fashion and beauty looks from the night.
This is one of my favorite looks from the night. Hailey Baldwin is simply stunning in this two-piece gown by Carolina Herrera. I love how she pairs this tiered gown with a choker and headpiece. This look on the young model is a breath of fresh air from her usual casual-cool style.
This is the best I have ever seen Elizabeth Banks look. With her bleach blonde locks and geometric Michael Kors dress, she slays the red carpet.
We can't talk about the Met Gala without mentioning Katy Perry. As one of the hosts of the event and covering this month's Vogue issue, she went with an expected over-the-top look. It is impossible not to notice the singer in this vibrant red Maison Margiela look.
Lily Aldridge stuns in this white Ralph Lauren dress, paired with these Balenciaga thigh highs. I love that she went with minimal and natural makeup to balance out this look.
Jourdan Dunn collaborated with H&M to design her custom look. This model definitely channels Comme Des Garcons in this trendy and unique ensemble.
I am convinced that Gigi Hadid can do no wrong. She is seen sporting a look by friend and collaborator Tommy Hilfiger. This look is definitely on-theme as the asymmetric dress is paired with fishnet stockings and bleached brows, a trend that has been seen at the Met Gala over the past few years.
Cara Delevingne deserves a mention for testing out this bold beauty look. This model-turned-actress has painted her bald head silver for the event. Of course this silver ensemble is Chanel, as she has long been one of Karl Lagerfeld's muses. Her hair perfectly matches this exquisitely detailed jumpsuit.
Is there any other couple as cute as Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds? Their red carpet fashion is always on point. Blake is wearing Atelier Versace, paired with her usual Lorraine Schwartz jewelry, but let's be honest, there is no better accessory than having Ryan Reynolds as arm candy.
Rihanna, an iconic Met Gala veteran, went for an extremely architectural look from the Comme des Garcons Spring collection. This was one of the most anticipated looks from the night as RiRi is always on theme, and always styled to perfection. This look was inspired "18th century punks." In an interview, the singer claims that the outfit was the easy part, it was the shoes that took her an hour to put on.
And last, but not least, Anna Wintour. This extravagant Chanel gown is fit only for the Editorial Director of Vogue.
Be sure to check out the exhibit, set to open on May 4th.
