Well, we all made it through Christmas and the weekend. Here at Melroso, we sincerely hope that you had a wonderful holiday. Whether you spent it with family around the fireplace or with your crew on the beach, we hope it was everything you'd hoped for and more. Next up, it's time to ring in the new year. 2017, who’s ready?
You may have engaged in a debate at some point or another about whether it’s bringing or ringing in the new year. In truth, either is accurate. Bringing is a newer way of saying, let's bring in the new and leave the old. Ringing in the new year is a phrase from when it was popular to ring bells at celebrations. When the start of a new year became a regularly celebrated holiday, they started to ring the bells at midnight, Dec. 31st. The ringing of the bells had long since had a spiritual connection and adding them to new year celebrations was just another way to celebrate a different type of beginning and ending. Alfred Lord Tennyson wrote a poem in 1850 entitled “Ring Out, Wild Bells.” It follows:
Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells across the snow;
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.
You may not be ringing bells on the arrival of the new year but you can still ring in the new year with confidence. There's a variety of activities you can occupy yourself with if ringing bells isn't your thing. The famous ball drop at Time Square is a favorite pastime for many. Whether bundled up and there in person or watching the spectacle from the warmth of your own home, the countdown to the new year is always anticipated. Perhaps you'd rather spend your new year in a hotel enjoying multiple course meals, live music, and champagne. Many of these hotels even have fireworks and a “hangover” brunch for the next day. Perhaps you'd rather enjoy a quiet scenic new year celebration. Whether at home or hiding out in a cabin, we’re sure you can find ways to make your new year celebration special.
Whether you're in New York watching the ball drop, in Bermuda with your toes in the sand, or in Oregon enjoying the peace and quiet, we wish you well and all the happiness for the new year.
