The Trends You May Have Missed From Fall '17
Kicking Fashion Month off in New York, fashion and politics seemed to go hand in hand. Most of the designers who showed seemed to have agreed on making their voices heard through their collections. As Anna Wintour reminisces on NYFW, she reflects on the widespread optimism and celebration of women from all walks of life. Even Hillary Clinton got in on the action, pairing a gold, statement necklace with a hot pink Oscar De La Renta wool coat. While the fashion was loud, much of the jewelry was understated and served as a perfect accent to each look. Mismatched earrings, ear cuffs, and chokers were prevalent on the runways. These trends have been renewed over the past few seasons, and show no signs of slowing down soon. As a whole, fashion seems to be moving in a direction that is more inclusive of men and women of different sizes, races, and ages. The profile of the typical supermodel is changing rapidly as fashion realizes that customers want to see real people on the runway. While New York showed many energizing, rebellious looks, London found itself sticking to its familiar quirky and fun fashions in a time of uncertainty. British designers wore their hearts on their sleeves for their Fall '17 collections while celebrating cultural diversity. Milan saw fashion as a celebration of life. From Dolce and Gabbana's Insta Famous lineup, to Alessandro Michele's highly anticipated Gucci collection, Milan did not disappoint. (Does it ever?) Parisian chic was brought to another level with designers like Phoebe Philo hitting refresh at Celine, Balenciaga nodding to Bernie Sanders, and Stella McCartney's feel good message for Fall. As the shows come to a close, it is apparent that the most important takeaway trend from Fashion Month is the ability to stay positive in uncertain times, and it has been proven that this can be achieved through taking risks in life as well as fashion. Now comes the difficult part...be patient, and wait for these Fall '17 collections to drop.
