Happy Summer Solstice.
Now that the Summer Solstice has finally arrived, it's time to up your game with these hacks to look great, keep cool, and stay busy this season.
When it comes to picking out a good book to read, there is no source I trust more than Oprah's Book Club or The New York Times Best Sellers. The next book on my must-read list this summer is Into the Water by Paula Hawkins. If you're not familiar with Hawkins' debut thriller, Girl on the Train, then I suggest you pick yourself up a copy. Her suspenseful books are the perfect beach read and I can almost guarantee you won't be able to put it down. Another fan-favorite is Big Little Lies. This is another on my must-read list because I loved the novel's short series on HBO so much. If you haven't seen the show yet, I suggest reading the book first because everyone knows the book is always better than the movie anyway. No spoilers here!
The Wicker Bag.
There is no accessory this season that feels as fresh as the wicker bag. This vintage-inspired bag comes in so many different styles due to it's recent rise in popularity. You can go the classic route and sport this trend with an oversized beach bag, or grab a chic woven clutch. With so many different brands offering this trend, it can be hard to choose one. Because weaving is considered a useful skill in many parts of the world, grabbing one of these bags from a fair trade brand that supports artisans will make you look as good as you feel.
Sun damage is no joke. Too many rays can cause premature aging and sun damage, so be sure to protect yourself. While many think that sunscreen can cause breakouts and make skin look greasy, sunscreen brand Supergoop offers a few alternatives. My favorite product in the line is the Defense Refresh Setting Mist with SPF 50. This product is the best because it sets your makeup even on the hottest days, allowing you to put your freshest face forward. This 3 in 1 product will set your makeup and control oil, all while protecting you from harmful rays.
For summer, I love simple and understated accessories. A touch of silver or gold goes a long way this time of year. In the heat, uncomplicated beauty routines are key. The carefree look is always in this time of year so let your beachy waves and glowing skin do most of the talking.
The Lab and Rock Crystal Ring Set from Tai is a summer essential. These stackers feel bohemian, without being too in your face. I also love the shade of these natural stones. Click the image to purchase. $85
The Wire Choker with Dangling Opal from Tai is so delicate and feminine. Click the image to purchase. $70
This necklace is truly versatile. I love the thinness of the chain and subtlety of the CZ's. The Simple Chain Necklace with Stationed CZ's from Tai. Click the image to purchase. $60
I have always been a minimalist when it comes to hair care. Partly because no matter how I style it, it usually goes back to it's usual messy wave. I go for Victoria's Secret Beach Wave Spray because it smells like the beach and adds waves, no ocean necessary. This product will help smooth frizz and add volume to your 'do for a no-fuss beauty routine.
I am all too familiar with pasty, pale skin that seems to last year round. Due to this realization, I can honestly say that I have tried almost every self tanner out there. But no tan-in-a-bottle has ever been as convincing as the Clinique Self Sun Body Tinted Lotion. This body lotion will give you instant color and will continue to accelerate over the next few hours after application. The color is so natural and way easier to apply than tanning sprays I have tried in the past. Be sure to get the facial lotion along with it so you can show off your UV free, sun-kissed glow.
There is nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than slurping on a popsicle. Even better than that? One filled with booze. One of my favorite hacks is using watermelon to blend with your favorite summertime spirit. For me, there is nothing better than an ice cold glass of crisp prosecco, so I usually opt for those bubbles when making this recipe. To make, cut and blend a seedless watermelon with a few cups of prosecco then strain into popsicle trays and freeze. If you're looking for an even easier route, cut the watermelon into triangle pieces, place a popsicle stick in the bottom, and let the watermelon soak in prosecco. After about an hour, put the watermelon chunks in the freezer and in a few hours you'll have a tasty treat. These are always a hit at a BBQ or pool party, but be careful because forget they're infused with alcohol!
